Join us as People in Places celebrates its first in person event since our launch in 2020. On Rebuilding Through Design will take place during NYCxDESIGN at Industry City.
On Rebuilding Through Design discusses how design can become a mechanism for rebuilding communities and societies after crises – whether as a result of war, environmental or economic strife. A series of speakers will look at how design can be leveraged to rethink, reconstruct and redefine our environment.
Jukka Savolainen, Director of Design Museo & Chair of the Finnish Cultural Institute of NY, offers a discussion on how design became integral to the flourishing of Finnish culture and a means of societal rebuilding after WWII.
Jane Lea, Co-Founder of Design Advocates and Founder of Lea Architecture, will discuss the community-oriented, nonlinear process of Design Advocates and what it looks like to leverage design of various types and scales to rebuild places and people. The work of D.A. began during the pandemic and a landscape of economic inequality and continues to grow with the needs of society over time.
The event will begin with a short introduction and end with a shared Q+A with questions from the audience. A written essay from each speaker and extended reading list for the topic will be provided and added to the People In Places archive.
