Rockwell Group / Theater District Walking Tour

8:00 am - 5:00 pm

To quote Elizabeth Wollman from A Critical Companion to the American Stage Musical, Times Square is both “grungy and gorgeous, sleazy and romantic”. Because it contains and balances these contradictions it has a particular magic and serves as a true melting pot in a way other theater districts don’t. And its evolution is so unique, developing alongside the American stage musical over the last 100-plus years. As theaters and the other industries that supported them (costume shops, talent agencies, print shops, Steinways piano store, etc.) began to move to Times Square in the early 1900s, the number of theater venues and productions spiked. That coincided with the invention of electric light bulbs and neon, which allowed for the marquee signage we all know today. Broadway has stood the test of time, through so many ups and downs, economic and otherwise — just like New Yorkers themselves.

Join Rockwell Group for a special tour of the Theater District, with stops highlighting Broadway’s architectural and cultural landmarks, followed by a tour of the new CIVILIAN Hotel. Designed by David Rockwell, CIVILIAN quotes from the look and feel of the neighborhoods iconic theaters and hangouts, and features the Olio Collection, a first-of-its-kind curated art program with works by emerging and established theater creatives. A natural extension of Rockwell’s decades of work designing sets for Broadway and theaters, the hotel celebrates its locale by paying homage to the art of theater in its totality.

This event is open to design students and trade only.
