Marta and Catalog Sale are pleased to present Make-Do, on view in Manhattan from May 19 – 27 2023 in tandem with NYCxDESIGN and its attendant celebrations of citywide and regional talent. Presenting twelve historic instances of ad-hoc chairs in dialogue with a dozen contemporary entries realized in the same spirit, the exhibition hosts a menagerie of unique seating works that celebrate the variegated meeting-points of form, function, materiality, and improvisation. Featuring new pieces from New York-based artists and designers Joseph Algieri, Samuel Brockman, Sarah Burns, Chen Chen & Kai Williams, Miles Huston, ‘Sebastijan Jemec & Georgia McGovern, Minjae Kim, Nifemi Ogunro, Isabel Rower, Shaina Tabak, Brendan Timmins, and Kristen Wentrcek & Andrew Zebulon, Make-Do is the inaugural curatorial collaboration between New York alternative auction house Catalog Sale and Los Angeles-based art and design gallery Marta. Here, the oft-maligned practice of ‘making-do’—embracing the simultaneous limitations of materials, tools, space, and time (constraints all to familiar to New York’s denizens)—is instead exalted as creative opportunity, with the works on view acting as abstracted portraits of the city itself. Join us for the public opening of Make–Do on Friday, May 19 from 6 – 9PM at 5 Chatham Square, New York, NY 10038.
