The Guggenheim is offering a free virtual tour of Gego: Measuring Infinity – currently on view till September 10, 2023. The tour will offer a fully integrated view of Gego’s practice in the artistic contexts of Latin America and her distinctive approach to the language of abstraction. First trained as an architect and engineer, Gego, or Gertrud Goldschmidt, fled Nazi persecution and settled in Venezuela where she embarked on an artistic career that would span more than four decades. Gego’s work explores the relationship between line, space, and volume, while also incorporating her practices in architecture, design, and teaching. Despite being one of the most significant artists to emerge from Latin America during the second half of the twentieth century, Gego’s work remains lesser known in the United States. This major retrospective features nearly 200 works from the early 1950s through the early 1990s, including sculptures, drawings, prints, textiles, and artist’s books, giving Gego the recognition she deserves.
